Skimming
Skimming is a thin layer of plaster applied to walls and ceilings to provide a smooth level surface for painting or papering. It can be used to hide scratches and dents in old plaster, or be applied over new plasterboards to create the finished effect. A perfect skim can be a tricky plastering skill to get right, and it's often the difference between a flat smooth wall, or a lumpy mess. Don't take the risk of getting it wrong, call Plastering Bradford for a perfect professional skim and have plaster to be proud of! A Handy Guide to Skimming Because the skim is the very top layer of plaster providing the visible surface to your walls and ceilings, it needs to be even and smooth to the touch. Skim plaster is composed of a very fine texture, and as well as being used as the top coat for plasterboards and new plaster, it can also be applied over old plaster to hide small damages and cracks. A skim layer is roughly around 2mm thick, which is usually enough to cover up most scratches and dents caused by normal everyday wear and tear. It also provides the ideal flat surface needed for painting and wallpapering. When applying over old plaster it is important that the wall or ceiling is essentially sound and unlikely to be further damaged by the added weight of new plaster. The surface area should be closely examined before work starts, and any significant imperfections or faults will need to be filled and sanded smooth. Any areas of plaster that are loose or crumbling must be repaired or removed completely. If necessary, a layer of PVA can be applied to the surface using a roller prior to skimming to help the new plaster adhere to the original layer. To ensure a perfect looking skim layer, the surface must be properly prepared beforehand, possibly by sanding to provide a good key for the skim. It is possible to apply a skim coat to a painted wall if necessary, but this is only recommended if the paint is sound and not loose or peeling. If the correct preparation has been completed, the resulting skim should look perfectly even and smooth. This is particularly important if you are planning on painting your walls and ceilings as any imperfections will be glaringly visible. However, if the preparation has been done incorrectly, it could end up looking even worse than before work began. Unfortunately, many people will often try skimming their walls or ceilings themselves hoping to save time and money, but quickly discover that the finished result has been ruined by inadequate plasterwork underneath. It is therefore important to seek professional advice on whether skimming is suitable for your walls, or whether a complete re-plaster would be a better option. If skimming does go wrong the only remedy might be to remove of all the damaged plaster and start afresh. But don't worry, if this has happened to you, let the experts put it right!
