Cornices and Coving Lots of houses, especially older ones, contain decorative plasterwork known as cornices and coving. There is often some confusion between the two terms, however, cornices are the mouldings that hide the line between walls and ceilings, and coving is a generic term used for any kind of decorative plaster moulding. Features such as these not only enhance the look of a room, but they also provide a useful means of hiding any visible joins or imperfections in the underlying plaster. Cornices and coving aren't generally used in many modern buildings as they are an extra expense and often regarded as period features. New plasterwork should not contain any cracks or joins if it has been applied correctly and so the need to hide such problems is rarely needed. Decorative mouldings have therefore largely fallen out of fashion for many contemporary settings, but many people still choose to add them to their homes to create an elegant period look. For grander houses in the past they were often made to order and crafted on site, but modern cornices and coving come prepared in a variety of pre-moulded shapes. These range from simplistic concave forms to more elaborate Egg and Dart styles. Although relatively simple to fit, it is much harder to ensure all sections are flush and positioned correctly as no-one wants to end up with wonky looking ceilings or surrounds. If you would like to have cornices or coving installed, Plastering Bradford provide a full fitting service to the highest possible standards. We can also advise on the best styles and materials to choose. If your home already has cornices or coving, we are able to renovate and repair any minor damage. Should you wish for a more modern style to your room we can also remove mouldings if they no longer fit in with your designs. Plasterboarding Plasterboards are large panels of (usually) gypsum plaster pressed between a facer panel and a backer panel. They are fitted to a wall or ceiling to provide a flat even surface which is then given a skim finish. Plasterboarding is much quicker and easier to install than the traditional lath and plaster method of finishing walls, and has largely replaced it in recent years. Plasterboards are also used in building renovation work as a useful way to hide damage or to level up an old wonky wall. It is arguable that they don't give quite as perfect a finish as traditional lath and plaster, but the difference is negligible. They have the advantage over the older method of requiring less skill and time, and they are much cheaper to use. The main difficulties arise when trying to accurately joining each board together to form a smooth seamless surface. The quality of this jointing will have the biggest impact on the overall standard of the finished job. This is a good option for both new build properties or for those undergoing complete renovation. This is a coarse plaster render used on exterior walls as a cheap, durable and hard-wearing barrier against weather extremes. It is made up of cement mixed with sand, gravel or pebbles to give a highly textured finish and was extremely popular on houses during the 1970s and 80s. It is generally considered to be outdated today, but like many styles from that period, it's beginning to make a gradual comeback. Plastering Bradford provide a full roughcasting service and also offer solutions for those wishing to get rid of existing pebbledash from their houses. We supply and install new textured wall coatings which can hide old damaged pebbledash replacing it with a smooth modern finish.
